The name Amberleigh brings together two ideas.

“Amber” evokes warmth, golden light and something naturally beautiful that endures over time. Its rich, golden tones create an immediate connection with Golden Grove while also reflecting the colours of the surrounding landscape as they change throughout the seasons.

“Leigh” originates from an Old English word meaning a meadow, woodland clearing or open field. It is a word associated with space, nature and a landscape in which people can gather and settle.

Together, the two elements suggest a warm, open landscape: a place shaped by golden light, natural surroundings and room to live.

The name reflects Amberleigh’s central philosophy that space is the ultimate luxury. It speaks not only to the physical generosity of the neighbourhood, but also to the sense of openness, ease and possibility that thoughtful planning can create.

A landscape with a much longer story

The history of Golden Grove extends well beyond the suburb we recognise today.

The area forms part of the traditional lands of the Kaurna people, whose cultural and spiritual connection to Country stretches back countless generations and continues today.

The natural landscape, its waterways, vegetation, wildlife and changing seasons would have shaped movement and life across the region long before European settlement.

This connection to the land remains an important part of Golden Grove’s story. At Amberleigh, the landscape continues to play a defining role, with the natural characteristics of the site informing the masterplan and the way the future neighbourhood will take shape.

How Golden Grove received its name

European settlement in the broader Tea Tree Gully district began during the late 1830s.

Captain Adam Robertson and his wife Elizabeth arrived in South Australia in 1839. Robertson later purchased land in the district and established a property known as Golden Grove Farm.

The farm was named after the last ship Robertson had commanded, the Golden Grove. As the surrounding settlement developed, local residents began referring to the area by the same name.

Robertson also contributed to the early community by donating land for a local school. The Golden Grove School became an important gathering place, with the building also used for church services and community activities.

From its earliest European settlement, the Golden Grove name therefore became associated not only with the land, but with education, community and a growing sense of belonging.

From rural land to a masterplanned community

For much of its early history, Golden Grove remained predominantly rural, with farms, dairies, orchards and quarries forming part of the landscape.

That began to change during the 1970s, when the South Australian Land Commission started acquiring land in Golden Grove and Wynn Vale to accommodate Adelaide’s growing population.

In 1983, Delfin Property Group was selected to work with the South Australian Urban Land Trust on the development of Golden Grove. The intention was to create more than a collection of new houses. It was to be a comprehensively planned community with education, shopping, recreation, employment and open space considered from the beginning.

Construction commenced during the mid-1980s, beginning a new chapter in Golden Grove’s history.

A suburb planned around community

Golden Grove became recognised for its coordinated approach to suburban planning.

Residential neighbourhoods were supported by shopping centres, parks, reserves, sporting facilities and public transport connections. Schools were positioned as a central part of the community, including the innovative shared secondary education precinct now known as the ONE+ campus.

Bringing together Golden Grove High School, Pedare Christian College and Gleeson College, the campus created a unique alliance across public, independent and Catholic education.

This emphasis on education, open space and community infrastructure helped Golden Grove develop a strong identity. Rather than functioning simply as a residential expansion, it became a place where people could build long-term connections.

Many families who grew up in Golden Grove have remained in the area or returned later to raise families of their own. This continuity has created a sense of familiarity and belonging that cannot be manufactured overnight.

The next chapter for Golden Grove

Amberleigh continues Golden Grove’s tradition of considered masterplanning while introducing a contemporary approach to the way people want to live today.

Brought to life by YAS Property & Developments, Amberleigh will comprise approximately 850 allotments within a landscape of gentle rises, open outlooks and established natural features.

The masterplan has been shaped around the characteristics of the land. Streets and allotments will respond to its contours, while walking paths, green spaces, nature-inspired playgrounds and gathering areas will encourage movement and connection.

Established trees and natural features will be retained and integrated wherever possible, allowing the neighbourhood to feel grounded in its setting from the beginning.
